Introduction

We met at the Mulberry Recreation Center on January 4.  Margie opened the meeting with her usual warm welcoming comments.  She passed out waiver forms for members (Villages residents) to sign that The Villages requires each year.

We had five guests at our meeting; 45 paid members were in attendance; with a grand total of 50.  The dues remain $7 and allows the members to attend both Chapters.

Announcements

We can now meet for our regular meetings both in February and March.  In the past the Competition and Expo counted as our monthly meetings even though they weren’t held on our regular meeting dates.

First order of business was a discussion on the Club’s picture book of the members and their winning pages of this year’s competition to be held in February 2011.

Our next discussion item was about “calendar picture” books that we plan to create and take to nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

Margie discussed the January workshop to be held January 29 from 9 AM to noon at The Villages Life Long Learning College.  The attendees were selected by lottery and the cost is $10.

Competition and Awards Luncheon is $6 if you are a participant with at least one entry; and, $11 if you a non-participating member.  Payment for the luncheon will be collected prior to the Competition.

There was discussion about the Competition at Bridgeport Rec Center.

Registration:  February 4 at 9-11 AM in the Outer Banks room. Once a page is registered, it is entered; cannot change.

Competition:  February 5 at La Hacienda Rec Center, Carmen Miranda Room

Times and further details are on the website.

A Sign Up sheet was provided for volunteers and for participation for the competition.

Margie explained the list of categories; competition criteria; entry information; i.e., must be a club member; only one entry per category; and cannot enter pages that have previously won.

February's Program

What to do with your collection, Cathy Van Benthuysen.

Show & Tell

Linda Manson showed her scrapbook using My Memories software where she had it printed at Office Depot.  She told the members to Google Elegant Word Art by Bethany to get very nice free fonts.

Q&A (there were a few questions from the members).

Break (during the break, Margie took our pictures for the picture book).

Today's Program

Creating a template and An Alternative for Printing

Margie began showing us a project/template using Scrapbook Factory but had to stop because Lisa Rojas arrived.  She was the Club’s special guest.  Her business is printing and she discussed different aspects of what she can do to help us with our printing needs.  Her print shop is located in Leesburg.  She can print a 12x12 for $1; 8 ½ by 11, $.50; $.80 for two-sided.  Coil-bind books are $3; perfect-bind (with glue, $4; saddle stitching, $2.50).  Color quality is very nice.  Cook books can be laminated.  No minimum orders.  She will help set up a book, called pre-pressing, which lowers costs when pdf files are in one file.  A machine to do hard bound books is imminent.  The printing company is called A Plus Printing and is located two blocks before the orange factory on 441.

There was no time left for Margie to continue her presentation of templates.

Meeting adjourned at 2 PM.

Introduction

We met at the Mulberry Recreation Center on February 1.  Margie opened the meeting with her usual warm welcoming comments.  There was one guest and 22 members present; and we have a total of 114 paid members.

Today’s Presentation

Linda Manson presentation was on downloading scrapbooking items from the internet beginning with installing fonts.  She suggested to Google “Installing Fonts” for additional information.  Linda uses three different websites to locate special fonts for scrapbooking.

She showed a site called:  www.Kevenandamanda.com, then find and click on Free Fonts.  Make sure when you download that you know where the downloads are going!  Other free sites are:  1001freefonts.com, Dafont.com, and Elegantwordart2.blogspot.com.  The Eleganwordart also has nice sayings to use and they are free too.

Another site, ShabbyPrincess.com is a site where you can download “kits” that are free and also for purchase.  Sign up for the newsletters and use a gmail or yahoo account strictly for that purpose.  Linda also said we could contact her by email or phone to discuss any of the procedures she presented.

Show and Tell

Before the break, Maureen Clark did a sign up for the Fold Out Book workshop with a list of supplies to bring to the meeting where she will demonstrate how to make this book.  The workshop will be done at Lake Miona meeting and she will charge $3.  Maureen will provide some of the materials.  A sign-up sheet for the workshop will be at today’s meeting, the Miona meeting in February, and the Mulberry meeting in March.  This workshop will take approximately 90 minutes and will replace the regular monthly meeting in March at Lake Miona.

Mary Lou Guthrie suggested that we do a program on creating scrapbook pages using PSE.

Margie asked about the Help Desk and will send out an email about it.  She went over the list of helpers.  To become a Helper, contact Margie.  Members can correspond or contact the Helper in whatever category is appropriate.

Margie explained the “old calendars” project for the nursing and assisted living facilities in the surrounding communities.  She had a Committee Sign Up sheet project.  She also passed around the Sign Up sheet for the Expo.

Jane talked about the PSE tutorial disk.  Google Photoshopelementstechniques.com  for more details on learning this program and subscribing to their newsletters.

April 2011 – Mulberry Chapter Minutes

Digital Scrapbooking Club (DSC)

Introduction

Renewals are due this month.

Margie opened the meeting promptly at 12 noon.  She introduced our guest speaker/presenter, Roy Wilson.  Roy’s presentation is:  50th Family Reunion Book. Roy gave each DSC attendee a hand-out of how he prepared the book -- a compilation of 50 years of family information, pictures, and activities throughout this 50-year period.  Roy also had four copies of the book that he passed to the audience for their review.  Fifty-seven copies of the book were printed at Ford Press in Leesburg for about $25 a copy.  Copies were given to the individual families.  At the end of his presentation, the members asked questions and Roy answered as best he could.  His presentation lasted 45 minutes.

Margie introduced Sue Allie and Sue shared the “Competition” book with all of the winners included.  Nancy Keen and Jane Millar helped Sue put the book together.  The book was printed by Shutterfly, an online printing service (www.shutterfly.com).  The first “cut” didn’t turn out as well as expected, but Sue came through with a alternative so it would print correctly.  The cost of the 8 ½ by 11 book was $39 with a discount.  Sue is offering a copy of the book on CD for $2.  Members should let Sue know if they want a copy of the CD.

Margie talked to the group about Smilebox and to be careful because it automatically renews each year and billed to your credit card.

Al Williamson was introduced and Al discussed the pictorial directory.  He used MS Word, MS Excel, and PhotoShop Elements.  He then put the book together with PageMaker.  He showed an example of a book that he had done for another organization.  He needs the entire group to send his/her picture with the basic information needed.  Seventy-four (74) have responded thus far.

Nominations and Election of Officers (Lou Leonard was head of the Nomination Committee).  A separate list is attached to these Minutes.

Lou discussed the proposed newly created positions of Publicity/Program Chairman and Social Chairman (and their co-positions).

A partial slate was accepted and the members will discuss the vacancies at a future meeting.

Slate of officers accepted.  All in favor.

Meeting was adjourned at 2 PM.

Jim (?)  gave us an update on the picture books that we are sending to the “nursing homes.”

Margie introduced our new webmaster:  Her name is Wendy Graybeck and she lives in New Jersey.  Margie read her bio to the members.  Wendy will be visiting and will be attending some of the meetings and events.

Upcoming Programs

June Program at Mulberry (June 7):  Maureen Terrien will talk to us about taking award winning photos.

June Program at Lake Miona (June 21):  Tom Solerno will present Picasa tips and ideas.

Show & Tell

Lucky showed her scrapbook of her family’s trip to Washington, DC.  She answered some questions and a few members made comments to give other members some ideas of what can be done.

Cathy Johnson showed a scrapbook page using a technique from phixr.com.

Printed Directories

Al Williamson and Julie Wirtz compiled a very nice pictorial directory of the DSC members.  The cost is $2 for each book.  Each member who sent a picture is included in the directory.

Help Desk

The Help Desk is being revised.  Margie talked about remote assistance.  You can connect to someone online elsewhere; or vice versa.  Remote Assistance is a free download.

Download teamviewer.com; after that, we will have practice sessions to learn how to do it.  That way we can help others who have problems. Call Margie if you have questions.

Q&A

The new member inquired about printers and ink.  Margie said she has an HP and uses remanufactured cartridges.

How to fill the background with a color only on a scrapbook page.  Use a box and "fill" to do this.

How to print borderless.  Be sure to reset the page margins to 0.  Then in your preferences, choose print borderless.

Some members had questions on printing.  One question about printing a card; Margie suggested to print maually rather than double sided.

BREAK (20 minutes)

Collect-A-Kit Free CD

This free CD is full of free downloads.  Margie described what it contains and demonstrated how to use it.  When using the graphics in this kit, you will need to crop in another program such as PowerPoint in PNG file format to do away with the white box behind the graphic.  She showed us a quick way to resize the letters to the same size.  Bring in the all the letters in the word, select all the letters.  Draw a box around them to select all, or use control A.  Size down to the correct size and separate in the order desired.  Suggestion is to size things on a blank page.

Meeting adjourned at 2 PM.

June 2011 – Mulberry Chapter Minutes

Digital Scrapbooking Club (DSC)

Introduction

The Mulberry Chapter of DSC met on June 7, 2011.  Margie opened the meeting with her usual warm welcoming comments.  Introduced guests and visitors.  No new member sign ups.  Five guests, and 23 members attended.  Total number of paid members to date can be obtained from Al Williamson, our co-Treasurer.

Guest speaker, Maureen Terrien, discussed how to take award winning pictures.  Carolyn Rebholz introduced and read her bio.  Maureen belongs to the Photography Club, The Villages Art League, and has had a display in one of the Villages Magazine.  She also won First and Third places in the Villages Photo Contest.

Tips on How to Take Great Photographs!  A few basics and a simple point and shoot camera on the auto mode can give you great pictures.  Always shoot on highest resolution.  A few suggestion:  use the correct setting on your camera; i.e., sports, sunset, and close up; take lots of photos to capture one lucky shot; always carry your camera wherever you go; create a mood or “say something” with your picture because the composition is what gives you the “wow” factor; use the rule of thirds; never place the horizon line in the center of the photo; be careful of what is behind the person you are shooting; lighting is essential; and take pictures at early morning or early evening, a cloudy day, or a rainy day.  Regarding editing your photos, the eyes of animals and people should be sharp and use a software program to enhance your photos, like eliminating red eye.  Picasa is free and does a good job.  Maureen uses PhotoShop Elements (PSE), which is a paid program.  She recommends that you take a class at the Life Long Learning College.

BREAK

During the break, Margie asked the members if they had gotten their member directories.

No Show and Tell today.

Margie asked for volunteers to begin the Scrapbooking Memories of our Club.  We will start beginning 2010 and work backwards.  She has lots of materials and pictures for us to use.  Margie Whiddon, Linda Manson, Cathy Johnson, and Bev Katsoulis have volunteered.  Margie would like to have at least one more for a team.

Margie discussed Remote Assistance.  The free program to be downloaded is called Teamviewer.com.  This is to help people who have questions on doing scrapbooking.  We are in the practice phase at present.  Several members have already downloaded and practiced using it, including Margie.  We are training each other.  Contact Margie when the program has been downloaded so Margie can assign you a partner to practice this new technique.

Q&A

Margie explained to the guests that we have been a club since 2004 and started using Scrapbook Factory v.1 and we are now up to v.5, which costs from $20 to $40 depending on where you purchase it.  She opened it on the screen and demonstrated how it works.

Margie also showed the members how to RESTORE DOWN.  This means you can have two windows open simultaneously.  She also explained the MINIMIZE and MAXIMIZE too.

Margie went on to demonstrate Picasa and showed some peculiarities with it.  Margie also answered a few questions from the members.

Meeting adjourned at 2 PM.

August 2011 – Mulberry Chapter Minutes

Digital Scrapbooking Club (DSC)

Introduction

We met at the Mulberry Recreation Center on August 2.  Margie opened the meeting and asked if there were any guests or new members present.

There were no guests present at our meeting; 22 paid members were in attendance; Al Williamson, the Mulberry Chapter Treasurer, has the number of paid members from both chapters.  The dues remain $7 and allows the members to attend both Chapters.

The webmaster, Wendy Graybek, is well enough now to do our website.  Margie will email Wendy’s email address so that I can send the Minutes in PDF format as Wendy requested.

Margie passed around a hand-out on creating a project using a template (cropping, lines, resizing pictures, etc.).  Jane Millar had a suggestion for “helpful” links and Margie said there is a place on the website for that.  Margie is working with Wendy to get the website up and running with tutorials, etc.

Jerri Richardson (a friend of Margie’s and one of our very first judges for the Competition) shared gift ideas; i.e., candy wrappers, paper purses, toppers, gift boxes.  These articles can be used for favors or hostess gifts.  Linda Manson said you can “google” ideas for scrapbook templates.

Carolyn introduced Margie as a courtesy.  She is known as the Queen of Digital Scrapbooking!  Margie is also quite the Winnebago Traveler.  She will always be a teacher and always a helper.  Margie lived in Miami for 35 years and came to The Villages in 2003.  Margie set life to Scrapbook Factory software.  Our founder and President!

Today’s Presentation

After the introduction, Margie explained that to develop better skills, you need to use software products as often as possible.  Margie Whiddon’s presentation was on Scrapbook Factory and how to design a page – the basics.  She explained how to do a “place holder” where it says “double click to replace.”  She showed us how to resize a picture from landscape to portrait.  Use the crop tool to turn it into a portrait by using the corner arrows to stretch it down for cropping.  Be careful that your photo doesn’t pixilate.  If you scan old pictures, always scan at 300 dpi.  When you export the .sbk file to become a .jpg file do this:  Click on Export Image; then change the 96 resolution to 300; then click on JPEG Options and slide the bar all the way to the right and it will change the size.  Be sure you know the “path” of the file when you save it.  Members had several questions about resizing and filing.

Break

Jane Millar showed her $20 DSE software and presented one of her pages from the kits she downloaded.  She also showed a page from elements from ScrapGirls.

Cathy showed a mini-scrapbook she made for her friend of an article that was in the Villages magazine about her friend's husband.

Treva showed her scrapbook of her vacation to Greece.

Cindy showed one of her scrapbooks.  She does a scrapbook for each year and puts the year on the spine.  She calls it her pictoral diary for the year.

Continuing with Today’s Program

Margie showed us how to remove a spot or flaw in the picture by editing the picture using the clone tool.  She showed us how to put a line around a picture and how to rotate, flip, and arrange pictures on the page.  She showed us how to move the picture just a little by the arrow keys on the keyboard.  If you decide to choose another picture, use the “replace graphic” option.  You can move or change any element on the page.  She showed us how to change the color on some of the elements; e.g., different shapes that are in the program.

The meeting adjourned at 2 PM.

Very respectfully submitted,

/s/
