Digital Scrapbooking Club in The Villages Lake Miona Chapter Meeting May 20, 2008 Minutes
The first meeting of the Digital Scrapbooking Club meeting at Lake Miona Regional Recreation Center was May 20, 2008. Members and guests were invited to arrive at 8:45 for coffee, with the meeting running from 9 am to 11 am. This is the same chapter that previously met at Pimlico Recreation Center from 9:30 to 11:30 am on the third Tuesday of the month. The group size had increased to the point where we had outgrown the room at Pimlico, so a move was necessary. President Margie Whiddon called the meeting to order and introduced new members and guests. 42 persons attended, including 5 newly enrolled members and 3 guests. Because this was a special occasion, the club sponsored a door prize for this meeting. Maxine Cotton, a new member, won a $15 gift card from Staples. She was the 23rd person to sign in. This number was derived from the date, 20 plus 2 representing 2 chapters of the club, plus 1, this being the first meeting of this chapter at this location. Margie explained that at each meeting of both chapters, we feature a special speaker or a special presentation by one or more club members. In addition, we have a show and tell period where members can share their projects and instructions. There is also a question and answer period, and Margie shares a tip on the Scrapbook Factory software. The Mulberry Chapter will meet on June 3rd with Creative Memories representative Lisa Attaway presenting a program on journaling. At Lake Miona’s meeting June17, member Aine Waldron will do a program on the Lifetimes software, and creating a digital scrapbook online. Millie Baumruk shared a multi-media page of their granddaughter’s 12th birthday. Linda Manson told us how to do a personalized pocket-size calendar as a gift by making an insert to paste over the existing calendar cover. These can be purchased at the dollar store. Linda is the scrapbook coordinator for the two chapters and would like to have volunteers for her committee. She can be reached at curvesflorida@aol.com. During the question and answer session, Margie answered these questions: (1) How do I send a scrapbook page online to someone else; (2) Where in the Windows program is the auto-fix for photos located?; (3) How can I reduce the Scrapbook Factory templates to 8 x 8?; (4) In the text box, who do I sometimes get extra-large type that prints over itself?; (5) How do you adjust the size of the letters in a text box?; (6) Why is newspaper text blurry in Movie Maker? Tip from Margie: When moving things around on a page, you sometimes want to move more than one at a time. To do this, hold down the shift, select those items you want to move, then move them all together. Vern Baumruk did a presentation on creating a scrapbook page in Scrapbook Factory Deluxe, version 4. He showed step by step how you search for items, select the one you want to use, manipulate it, and make the final page. This demonstration was aimed at new users of the software. Nancy Borden demonstrated how to make a kaleidoscope page. While it is quite difficult to do such a page, the final result is quite impressive. Because of time constraints, Nancy was unable to present the mosaic page as planned. This will be scheduled at a later meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 11:00 a.m. Respectfully submitted,

Digital Scrapbooking Club in The Villages Pimlico Chapter Meeting April 15, 2008 Minutes The meeting was called to order by President Margie Whiddon at 9 am on April 15, 2008 at the Pimlico Recreation Center. Visitors and guests introduced themselves. Margie announced that this is the last meeting of the Pimlico Chapter. On May 20, 2008 the meeting of this chapter will be held from 9 to 11 am at Lake Miona Center. The chapter will then be known as the Lake Miona Chapter of the Digital Scrapbooking Club. Members are encouraged to arrive at 8:45 am for a brief social time to share Danish, coffee, and conversation. A slate of volunteering nominees was presented by the President. The office of co-vice-president was vacant, but Claudia Wood offered her name to fill the slot. The slate was accepted unanimously. The 2008 officers for the Lake Miona Chapter are: President Margie Whiddon Vice-President Tom Salerno Co-Vice-President Claudia Wood Secretary Lou Leonard Co-Secretary Mary Lou Guthrie Treasurer Judy O’Neill Co-Treasurer Jean Bateman Members who wish to send scrapbook pages to appear on the club’s website should save and send them as JPEG files to webmaster Al Williamson at offworks@aol.com. Margie talked about the club’s two major activities each year: the competition and banquet which takes place in February, and the expo every March. Both of these activities are open to all members. The award presentation and the expo are also open to visitors. New members should be aware that once dues of $7 are paid, they become a member of both the Lake Miona and the Mulberry Chapters of the Digital Scrapbooking Club. Programs at the two chapters are not the same. Attending both chapter meetings allows members to learn twice as much about digital scrapbooking. Meeting schedules are posted on the club’s web page: www.digitalscrapbookingclub.info May 20 at Lake Miona, Vern Baumruk will create a scrapbook page from scratch. Nancy Borden will demonstrate kaleidoscope pages. She told us about the new Help Desk which is available to members who need assistance with various phases of scrapbooking. Send an e-mail to Margie at: mwhiddon@comcast.net with a subject line: Help Desk. She will review the request and assign it to a club volunteer who has offered to help in that area of expertise. If you would like to discuss this by telephone with the club member assigned, please include your telephone number. Otherwise, the “assigned expert” will contact you by e-mail within a few days with a response to your question. If a long period of time has gone by with no response, please resubmit your question with a subject line: Help Desk - 2nd Request. Questions and answers to them (with no names attached) will eventually be posted on the club’s website for the benefit of all. An amusing and informative video on underwater photography was presented by Barbara Grill. She took the photos using an 18.50 underwater camera with flash which can be reloaded. She took the photos on a Sea Trek Helmet Dive in Cozumel at 18-20 feet under water. She prepared the video as well and provided commentary. Questions and answers followed. Jim Heter presented a short program on Windows Movie Maker, demonstrating its use. He used a video which was prepared using still photos from a trip to Colorado and California combined with video, transitions, and music. He indicated that about 90% of the work is done in the timeline area of the program. He also provided a very comprehensive handout for members to use when they try it at home. Jim suggests using a thumb drive to prepare the movie, then transferring it to a CD or DVD when it is a finished product. Jim Steuber teaches a course on Movie Maker at The Villages Lifelong Learning College. In our Show and Tell portion of the meeting, Cindy Dilks told us about how she saves interesting e-mail photos by subject for later use in scrapbook pages. She provided samples for us to review. Nancy Keen, who has been working with transparencies, showed us a photo of an orchid with family members in transparency clustered around it. Margie announced that Brenda Whitehurst will print new information cards for the club which will list the meeting dates and times of both chapters. These have been most helpful to hand out to prospective members. Under announcements, members should know that Photoshop Elements 6 has a new scrapbooking feature. Staples currently is featuring Scrapbook Factory Version 4 at a special price of $9.99 after rebate. Contact the store for details. Marguerite Manco, acting treasurer, requests that members who joined today, leave information sheets with her before they leave. There was a question regarding setting margins when making cards so that entire design prints. Margie answered that she uses a page setup first thing to set all 4 margins at .450. That will accommodate most printers. The default setting is only .250 and sometimes results in uneven page margins.
Respectfully submitted,
Secretary Lou Leonard

Digital Scrapbooking Club in The Villages Lake Miona Chapter Meeting June 18, 2008 Minutes The Lake Miona Chapter meeting of the Digital Scrapbooking Club in The Villages was called to order 9 am June 18, 2008 by Margie Whiddon, President. Margie called attention to the table at the front of the room where members may bring items they wish to sell. They can be viewed during the break. The order of business was changed today to feature member presentations first. At the last meeting, time was short and the presenters did not have time to complete their segment of the program. Nancy Borden was first on the program, completing her presentation on “Using Kaleidoscopes in Scrapbook Pages” which was begun at the May 20th meeting. She demonstrated how to build the kaleidoscope frame, inserted photos in the frame, and showed how to frame the photos. Nancy offered to send an e-mail to members detailing how to do a kaleidoscope page. If you did not receive it, let her know and she will send it to you now. Aine Waldron was the next presenter, demonstrating “Digital Scrapbooking Techniques”. She talked about selection of photos for a page, management of photos, refining photos using Adobe Photo Shop, choosing backgrounds that can be manipulated, using photos as backgrounds, using templates, and specialty papers. She indicated that A.C. Moore stores and online are good sources for specialty papers. The final club speaker was Linda Manson, showing us “How To Organize Photos in Files and Folders”. She provided information on some online sources for digital embellishments and scrapbook page backgrounds. She encouraged members to use several levels of files in order to provide ease in locating photos and avoiding placing too many photos in a file. She suggests 25 or less. Although it sounds like a daunting task to organize photos, since many of us have thousands, if it is done one file at a time, even one a day, it will eventually get done and save time and frustration later. She advocates using several levels of files and folders, which she calls “drilling down” to a certain level. She talked about various ways to back up files: external hard drives, CDs, DVDs, thumb drives, etc. A CD will hold 300-400 photos, and a DVD twice as many. Thumb (or flash) drives are available in many sizes, and external hard drives are available up to a 300 gig size. The important thing is that you back up in some manner. You’ll be glad you did and sorry if you don’t. Linda mentioned her classes at the Villages Lifelong Learning College on Paper Crafts. She also will teach a paper craft class on making cards the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays in September at 10 am. at Lake Miona. Presentations lasted until the adjournment time of 11 am. There was no time for introduction of guests and visitors. We had 30 members in attendance, 2 new members, 1 renewing member, and 6 guests this month for a total of 39. The meeting was adjourned. Members were reminded to arrive at 8:45 for coffee and Danish on July 15th. There will be no meeting at Mulberry on July 1st.

Digital Scrapbooking Club in The Villages Lake Miona Chapter Meeting July 15, 2008 Minutes The Lake Miona Chapter of the Digital Scrapbooking Club met July 15 at Lake Miona Regional Recreation Center with Tom Salerno, Vice-President, presiding.
The first presenter was member Annemarie Prioriello demonstrating Photostory 3 which is a software which offers a free download as well as a more sophisticated for-purchase version. A 2-page handout, Photostory 3 for Windows was distributed by Annemarie. Anyone who wants to know more about how she has used this software, can visit her website, FLSunshine1951@aol.com.
She pointed out that there is an option with this software to send your product to non-computer friends in JPEG. You also can Google free waves, sound bytes, etc. and download, then save your work to a SONIC DVD program. It is saved in a Photostory format, and it must be played in that. If you have VISTA, it allows you to burn Photostory on a DVD for free. Unlike Moviemaker, this program does not allow video to be imported.
Maureen Clark presented the web service, myfamily.com which allows users to build a family website. If you need 1 GB of space, you can purchase it for $30 per year. Less space than that is free. Invitations are sent out by the administrator (Maureen) to those who may use your personal site. The administrator is notified when new things are added to the space, and has the sole power to edit them. Any invitee can add photos, and she has 68 pages of them on her site. If users invite others to visit the website, the administrator can “bump” them off if they have no business being there, since she is notified of all visitors. This appears to be a very versatile site, one that could be utilized to create the cohesiveness missing in our sprawling, sometimes international families.
Tom Salerno did an unscheduled presentation on smilebox.com. Given proper organization of your photos, at this site one could create a 30-page photo album in 5 minutes. There are many different page template themes available and a choice of 3 music tracks. It costs $1.95 for an album and that includes 3 free e-mails. An entire album can be sent via e-mail, although the pages the receiver sees will be a smaller version. The service is $39 per year or $4.95 per month.
Because of time constraints, no guests or new members were introduced, there was no member show and tell time, and no announcements were made.
Respectfully submitted, Lou Leonard, Secretary

Digital Scrapbooking Club in The Villages Lake Miona Chapter Meeting May 19, 2009 Minutes The Lake Miona Chapter of the Digital Scrapbooking Club met at 9:00am at the Lake Miona Regional Recreation Center. Margie Whiddon, President opened the meeting and thanked everyone for coming out on such a rainy morning. There were 30 members and 5 guests in attendance. The total club membership now is at 68.
Margie announced that next year’s Competition will be held on Wednesday, February 3, 2010, 10:30am – 4:30pm at the Truman Recreation Center, Studebaker Room. Also the date for next years Expo will be Tuesday, March 2, 2010 from Noon to 3:00pm at the Colony Cottage Regional Recreation Center. There will be one hour prior to opening the doors to the public for setup and one hour allowed afterwards to take down the exhibits. We will again have two rooms allowing a separate room for our demonstrations.
Today’s program was “Printers” presented by Mark Rzemieniewski, General Manager of the Lady Lake Best Buy store and Stephen Francesconi of the “Geek Squad”. Tom Salerno, Vice-President, gave a little background about each of the speakers.
Stephen gave us quite a bit of information regarding printers. He explained the differences between laser and inkjet printers, discussed “dpi” (dots per inch) and how you get a better picture with a higher dpi. He also talked about different printer connections and types of paper and inks.
Some of the other points mentioned were: 1) best to use the printers own settings to get the best type of print; 2) don’t clean the print heads unless you absolutely have to as this uses a lot of ink; 3) photos printed with the latest types of inks, if kept away from sun and moisture will last for 65 years; 4) if your monitor does not match the colors of your printer, it may need to be calibrated.
After their presentation, they took questions from the members regarding types of ink, types of papers and wireless printing.
After a short break, we had “Show and Tell”. Many members brought samples of their work which were displayed on four tables in the front of the room. Several members, including some that won awards at our last competition, spoke about their projects and they passed them around the room so that we could all see them up close. Due to the time restraints, we could only hear from a few people.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:00am.
Respectfully submitted,
Mary Lou Guthrie, Secretary

Digital Scrapbooking Club in The Villages Lake Miona Chapter Meeting July 21, 2009 Minutes
The Lake Miona Chapter of the Digital Scrapbooking Club met at 9:00am at the Lake Miona Regional Recreation Center. Tom Salerno, Vice-President opened the meeting in the absence of President Margie Whiddon. There were 22 members and 11 guests in attendance. The total club membership now is at 79. Tom welcomed guests and discussed how the club operates – 1 club with 2 chapters. He also talked a little about the software program, Scrapbook Factory.
Today’s program was presented by Marguerite Manco. Marguerite gave her own bio, telling us that her family has always been the most important thing in her life. Her career was spent as a teacher, a job that she truly loved. She has lived in The Villages for 4 years.
Marguerite’s presentation was on Photo Books. She uses the online program “Shutterfly”. Her first tip was to create your projects online and then wait for one of their sales, which are often, before ordering.
Marguerite explained how you start with your pictures by organizing and putting them in a folder so that they are ready to use in your project. She also passed along a tip on how to number your photos. The next step was to select a background. As you add your photos to the book, you need to be aware of composition and symmetry so the pages flow. Journaling sometimes is needed to enhance the photos but sometimes the photos speak for themselves and do not need words. A handout was provided that explained all the basic steps to create your photo book.
Some members brought copies of their photo books to share and we looked at these during a short break.
After her presentation, Marguerite went online at http://www.shutterfly.com and walked us through creating a photo book and answered questions.
After Marguerite’s presentation, Tom talked about how to “Tag” photos in Windows Photo Gallery (VISTA). He also talked about how to create a collage in Picasa 3.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:00am.
Respectfully submitted,
Mary Lou Guthrie, Secretary

Digital Scrapbooking Club in The Villages Lake Miona Chapter Meeting June 16, 2009 Minutes
The Lake Miona Chapter of the Digital Scrapbooking Club met at 9:00am at the Lake Miona Regional Recreation Center. Tom Salerno, Vice-President opened the meeting in the absence of President Margie Whiddon. There were 24 members and 6 guests in attendance. The total club membership now is at 73.
Today’s program was “Free Programs” and was presented by Tom.
Tom discussed quite a few free programs. The first one that he featured was Picasa 3 http://picasa.google.com/. This is a photo editing program where you can easily crop, straighten, lighten and darken photos and add text. You can also upload the photos to Google’s free storage web site to be shared by others. Another option is e-mailing photos directly from the program. You do not have to have a G-Mail account to use this feature. If you do have a G-Mail account, Tom mentioned that there was a tutorial on the Picasa web site as to how to link the G-Mail account to your primary e-mail account. Another fun option available was to make a collage of your photos. He also showed the ease of printing from Picasa. Tom mentioned that when downloading the program, answer “NO” when they ask if you want ALL your photos to be captured. If you say “Yes”, it will bring in every graphic that is on your computer.
Tom also discussed and demonstrated these other helpful programs:
Smilebox http://www.smilebox.com/ - a program where you an create slide shows with text and music. Although the basic program is free, in order to burn DVDs and print your creations, you need the paid version which is $39.95 per year.
Jing http://www.jingproject.com/ - this program is used to capture screen prints, add graphics and text, make videos and e-mail them. It is a good way to create a tutorial.
PhotoFiltre http://photofiltre.en.softonic.com/ - this program is a photo editing program that can add artistic and special effects to photos.
FastStone Image Viewer http://www.faststone.org - this program is a photo editing program, similar to Picasa.
Photoscapes - http://www.photoscape.org/ps/main/index.php This is another photo editing program.
All My Faves - http://www.allmyfaves.com/ - this is a site that gives you the top web sites in many different categories.
Scrapbook-Elements - http://www.scrapbook-elements.com/sbe/ - this site offers many tutorials on various digital scrapbooking programs, in addition to FAQs, Forums, and a gallery of examples of scrapbook pages.
Wolframalpha - http://www.wolframalpha.com/ - this site has nothing to do with photos or scrapbooking. It is an interesting computational site that will give you answers to your questions or calculations.
Other items mentioned were the use of the “snipping tool” in VISTA which allows you to just print out portions of a web page that you want to print and also the new search engines recently available: Google Chrome and Microsoft Bing.
After a short break, we had “Show and Tell”. Nancy Keen showed us a lovely plate which had pictures of mothers and daughters. This display showed the resemblances between the two through various photos. She called it “Mirror, Mirror”. She also showed us a spinner that she made after attending the last Mulberry meeting where that craft was demonstrated.
Vern Baumruk encouraged everyone to back up their photos and data and gave us some information on small-sized, large capacity portable hard drives. One by Iomega that holds 160 GB of data and only costs $39.95, and a 4GB thumb drive that he purchased at Sam’s Club for under $13. He also demonstrated a new MP3 player that he recently purchased that has a large screen and the capacity to show many photos. It has many more features and only cost $89.95. It can be found on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Latte-Ice-Video-Player-Silver/dp/B000YTWOVA or Target http://www.target.com/Latte-Communications-8GB-MP3-Player/dp/B001EJ71BC . Vern recommended purchasing from Target as it makes returns easier, if necessary. The meeting was adjourned at 11:00am. Respectfully submitted,

She also talked about this year’s competition which will be held Wednesday, February 3, 2010 from 10:30-4:30 at the Truman Recreation Center. Also, our annual Expo will take place on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 from 12-3pm at the Colony Cottage Recreation Center. All club members are encouraged to participate in both events. More information can be found on the club’s web site: www.digitalscrapbookingclub.info At the next Mulberry and Lake Miona meetings, there will be a "mini-show". Ruth Horner gave a presentation on Genealogy. She spoke of her passion for writing and scrapbooking her family's history. She told us that Ft. Wayne, Indiana - Allen County Library and Salt Lake City, Utah have excellent resources for gathering information. She uses Family Tree Maker software to document her data. She also recommended "Ancestory.com" as a good source of information. Through "Ancestory.com" you can get census info, draft info including signature and other social security information. Local libraries have quite a bit of information, as does the Mormon church in Leesburg. Genealogy classes are available at the Life Long Learning College and there is a Genealogy Club in The Villages. She demo'd Family Tree Maker 9 but recommended if you are going to purchase to get the newer 2010 version as it is suppose to be much improved. After a short break, Virginia Mauldin gave a presentation on creating a Christmas card/letter using Powerpoint. This can then be "mailed" via an attachment to an email. She used old Christmas cards as backgrounds and included many photos of her life in The Villages. She also demonstrated how you could modify her project to make it your own through simple editing. Digital Scrapbooking Club in The Villages Lake Miona Chapter Meeting December 15, 2009 Minutes
Margie welcomed everyone and explained our club, one club 2 chapters, Mulberry Grove and Lake Miona. She went on to explain the competition in February and the Expo in March. Visitors and guests were introduced and welcomed. Margie explained about club shirts and that the ones who ordered shirts would be delivered at the January meeting and checks accepted at that time. Margie further explained that the club subsidizes the luncheon for the competition and awards with $5.00 of the club money leaving an entry with only $6.00 for the luncheon instead of $11.00. We will start collecting money for the luncheon in January. Margie explained the registry and the 10 categories that would be available to enter. She passed around a sign-up sheet for the Februray competition and also for the March Expo. The Expo will be from 12 – 3 p.m. at Colony Cottage. The Expo is free but we will have tickets to pass out and invite people to come. The Expo is open to the public. At the January 5 meeting there will be a demonstration on unique card ideas by Sue Allie and Maureen Clark, a scrapbook tip, show and tell and question and answer time. At the Lake Miona meeting on January 19 greeting cards beyond Scrapbook Factory will be demonstrated by Lou Leonard. There will be the usual tip, show and tell and question and answer time. There is a program for Apple computer users called “I Remember” that can be found at Scrappers Guide.com. A question was raised as to where to keep my pictures on the computer and various ideas were given. There was question and answer time Linda Manson was to give a demo on SmileBox.com but there were technical difficulties that prevented her from doing so. She explained that SmileBox.com’s basic program was free but the advanced you had to pay for. She showed a book that she had printed at Sam’s Club for $l.50 per page. The remaining time was spent browsing the computer slide shows that members brought and also their projects Since it was a Christmas time meeting members brought snacks and desserts to share. A good time was had by all. There was 1 new member and 10 guests, with 35 members making a total of 45 in attendance. Since the count was omitted for November that count was given to me also. There were 6 guests and 45 members for a total of 5l. Respectfully submitted, Millie Baumruk Acting Secretary
